Rail Baltica Ülemiste Joint Terminal
Ülemiste Joint Terminal is the starting point for the first fast railway connection in the Baltic States – Rail Baltica! It is an international fast, safe and environmentally friendly railway connection between Estonia and Central and Western Europe and the neighbouring countries. This terminal will be one of the main entrances to Estonia and its capital, Tallinn.
Rail Batic terminal is located in Tallinn between Ülemiste and T1 shopping centers, Ülemiste City and planned European Square. The square also connects the places with Tallinn airport. The main objective of the project was to design pedestrian friendly terminal building, which would connect the train , bus and tram traffic which all of them pass through the design area. With the future in mind, we also integrated in the project the tunnel which will connect Tallinn and Heliski in the near future. The terminal will have a remarkable importance in the city scape, because it will be the main gate to the city of Tallinn for many visitors.
The concept to put the terminal building underground came from the surroundings. Around the design area there are already two big shopping centers and we did'nt want to design between them a third big volume. On the ground floor we left only two sculptural entrances to the terminal and the minimal platforms for the trains. All the other functions of the building is underground.
