During the project, we worked on the biggest island in Estonia which is called Saaremaa. We divided the coast between 12 teams and each of them needed to offer a general plan for 30-70 kilometres of coastline. Our team worked with a very interesting part of the island which was many years ago a completely different island but today it is a peninsula.
Our main objective of the work was to offer the municipality of Saaremaa a clear vision of the future of the area based on the analysis. We analysed different scenarios and made a plan which measures could be taken now and what could be done in the future.

In our project, we focused on the people living already there. There are about 1500 people on the peninsula and the area of it is around 180 km2, so the population density is around 8 people on 1 square kilometre. We focused on maintaining the population there as good as we can because right now it is in decline. We offered to maintain the beautiful nature that the peninsula has to offer and develop the already existing two villages that they have there.

The important part is to improve the lives of the people that already live there. To acknowledge the things and activities that they need there. We offered to keep as much as possible in the area and connect the strategic and important parts of the peninsula so that the moving on the island would be logical and understandable. With the development of the strategic points, we wanted to give the peninsula a better identity and make it an attraction point for all of the island.
