RECONSTRUCTION PROJECT OF THE EKKM
Giving new life to the contemporary Art Museum of Estonia to revitalize a forgotten building and the area around it. A new building opens itself to the people from the inside out.
With the reconstruction project of the Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia (EKKM), the whole quarter has been solved in its entirety. The neighbouring buildings are shown in volumes. From the south of the building passes the Cultural Kilometer, where different cultural attraction points in the area are located. The addition to the existing building takes this into account and the passage and courtyard open to the street with a beam distance of 32 meters.
The café and terrace with the added volume open towards the Culture Kilometer and the southern sun. As seen from the city hall, the shape of the existing old overpass has been preserved. Taking into consideration the volume of the existing bookstore and its location, the height of the added volume drops to the edge of the plot. Considering the future movements between the objects of interest, a well-accessible courtyard has been created with a main entrance at the lower level.
In the new volume, the main staircase has been created with many levels so that the movement through the building would be interesting and would allow for different exhibits and installations to be showcased. On the intermediate levels, visitors can enjoy the greenery brought to the interior. The exterior is finished with aged copper facade tiles, the joints of which are filled with a resin of the same shade and sanded smooth.
